Where do you go when it feels like life is breaking you down to pieces?
For the past two years, it’s been to my meditation room.
My zen space has become the sacred place I come to when;
- I have a terrible day.
- Feel overwhelmed.
- Need a break from distractions.
- When I need clarity and wisdom.
- To cry and punch pillows or to simply rest.
Do you see where I am going? We all need a place we can come to relax or get grounded.
I say this because I was a wreck for most of my life; I was distracted, reactive, and fearful with extremely poor boundaries.
Creating a sacred space in my home has helped me grow.
When I come to it, I know, I can Just Be, I have felt my pain; faced fears and tamed demons in this space, I have also let a lot of stress go, felt joy and peace I never knew was possible.
The same meditation space has helped me build a strong foundation for life. It has taught me that I have the strength to handle whatever life throws my way.
This is why I am excited to share with you a few ideas on how to create a meditation room or a small zen space in your home or office.
Before we begin, I should point out that you do not need the things on this list.
What matters is that you take a few minutes every day to yourself to turn off distractions and calm your mind.
However, some people feel that these ideas (myself included) enhance their meditation experience and help them stick to the meditation practice.
Best Meditation Room Ideas For Beginners:
-
Define the Space And Create Boundaries
The first step is crucial: choose a space or room where you are most unlikely to be disturbed.
If you suspect that you may be disturbed, then tell your loved ones in advance why you are creating the space, so they will know not to bother you when you’re in there.
Additionally, keep the zen room minimalist and clutter-free.
Begin with essential items: Meditation Cushion, Yoga Mat, and a Plant.
-
Bring nature into the room.
Plants help us feel calm and relaxed, remember that feeling you get when you take a walk in nature?
Why not bring it to your meditation room/space.
Most people love to add a Peace Lily or a Boston fern to their meditation spaces or rooms.
-
Create A Ritual
I love to start my meditation with a ritual; I begin by lighting a candle as a signal to the subconscious mind that it’s time to relax and connect to myself.
Candles have long been a part of many ancient rituals, as their flame is thought to symbolize life force energy and light.
Consequently, I find myself looking forward to the experience because something about lighting a candle before the practice makes it sacred.
-
Turn Off Technology or Keep it Out Of the room.
Even if it’s for a few minutes, this is when you put yourself before the distractions thrown at you throughout the day.
Not only is technology distracting, but research shows that exposure to cellphone radiofrequency raises the stress levels in the body.
Remember, this is what we are trying to reduce by meditating.
So, put the technology away and listen to your inner world.
-
Clear the Space
Some people like to burn Incense, Sage, or Palo Santo to “clear the space.”
I don’t do this because of time; check the reviews on Amazon, and if it looks like something you would like to add your routine, go ahead and do so.
Otherwise, feel free to skip this step.
-
Brew Some Tea
Confession, uhm I have slept through some of my meditations, especially when I am sleep deprived!
With that said, I notice that if I have a cup of warm or hot tea before my meditation, I rarely sleep off.
Most people also, find hot tea to be incredibly calming to the system. The tea helps to relax the mind and relieve stress.
I love the red Rooibos tea; other times, I enjoy a cup of Hot Chocolate or an occasional cup of Tulsi tea when I am experiencing adrenal fatigue.
-
Activate Your Senses
A perfect scent can instantly uplift your mood and help calm your mind down.
I love essential oils and occasionally switch the scents depending on how I feel that day, not only for my meditation space but for the whole house.
Consequently, this diffuser keeps the essential oils going throughout the day. However, within my meditation space, I stick to Sandalwood, Lavender, and Frankincense.
You may also use incense, candles, or room sprays.
Other Meditation Room Supplies
Journal
In addition to having space to just be, meditation is an excellent way to gain clarity and wisdom, so keep a journal close to you.
I prefer to use an ordinary Notebook, but if you are new to journaling, you may get started with this 5-minute Journal.
Cozy Blanket
It’s not always peaceful in the Zen room; sometimes it gets ugly, you feel down and cry for hours (and I mean the ugly painful cry).
A cozy blanket can help you feel safe and comfortable.
Permission Slip To Feel
Don’t forget that meditation is not about avoiding your feelings.
In fact, it’s the complete opposite. It permits you to go deeper and understand yourself.
So, one of the most important things you’ll need for your meditation space or room is a permission slip from yourself to feel.
It will help you grow and move through obstacles quicker.
