“I like it when my mother smiles. And I especially like it when I make her smile.” ― Adriana Trigiani
It’s been three years since I become a mother, and Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays of the year.
I get to feel appreciated, and my efforts celebrated, most importantly, it’s an excuse to make my mother smile.
And if you are reading this, I assume you are also looking for ideas to make your special lady smile.
Although those efforts come with good intentions, I can’t help asking;
Why does Mother’s Day seem like another excuse for corporations to sell us more stuff and for us to consume even more?
Do mums need more stuff? Or do they want us to appreciate them, spend time with them, make them laugh, or simply share a meal?
How about giving your mum time to rest instead of getting her another handbag?
Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day, was quoted saying, “To have Mother’s Day the burdensome, wasteful, expensive gift day that Christmas and other special days have become, is not our pleasure.”
And I agree it shouldn’t be!
So how can we make our mothers feel special without buying them “stuff” they don’t need?
Here is a list of 10 Mother’s Day ideas that will put a smile on your special lady’s face.
Forgiveness
Although we love our mothers, they are not perfect beings, and they didn’t always get it right when they were raising us.
So why not offer your mother the gift of forgiveness this year?
She doesn’t need to ask for forgiveness; it is a gift you give regardless.
When I was a kid, my mum was perfect; she was my hero.
She still is, but as I grew older, I started to notice the mistakes she made raising me.
Now that I have my daughter, I realize that she did the best she could with the knowledge she had.
I think we can all do the same.
There is a visualization technique I use for this by Louis Hay.
Think of a weakness you perceive in your mother, something that gets on your nerves.
Imagine her as a little girl of 5, frightened and looking for love but not knowing where to find it.
Look into her eyes, reach out, and hold this little girl and let her know how much you love and care for her.
Let her know you’re here and that you will always be there for her.
Stay in this embrace until she feels safe.
If you do this visualization consistently, it will change your relationship with her.
Ask Her About Her Early Childhood
We often take for granted that our parents had a childhood and that just like us, they also had imperfect parents.
Additionally, we all need understanding, so why not let this Mother’s Day be about understanding your mum.
If you’re fortunate enough to see her physically, sit down over a glass of wine or tea.
Ask her about her childhood, ask her the fears she had growing up, what were her parents like?
What dreams did she have?
Let this Mother’s Day be a chance to meet the woman behind the role of being your mother.
Write Her a Gratitude Letter
Yes, I know you have already thanked your mum for all that’s she has done for you, but gratitude and appreciation don’t get old.
So this time, make it handwritten.
Get a paper and pen, and pour your heart out, tell your mum everything you would wish her to know if this was her last day.
Additionally, tell her the things you love about her, share your favorite memories, and don’t hold back anything good about her.
Then mail it to her if you can’t physically be with her; however, giving it to her physically or reading it to her is best.
Let Her Sleep In
I don’t know any mother in the world who wouldn’t use more sleep or rest and not just breakfast in bed!
Literally, let your mother take the day off and rest; yes, I know your mum loves doing all the chores at home, and she wouldn’t know what to do with the time for rest, but you can plan this too.
Seriously give the lady a break. Clean the house, make the meals or order take out, keep the kids busy, and let her do something to pamper herself.
You know your mum best, get her a good book to read, a bubble bath or a good movie.
Go Grocery Shopping for Her
A break from the weekly grocery store trip sounds simple, but it might just make your mum’s day.
Moreover, if you already know what she needs, a surprise delivery from whole foods will put a smile on her face.
Family Picnic
Another thing that doesn’t get old is time spent together, laughing, talking, and creating memories together.
So why not have a family picnic?
If the weather is beautiful, make snacks, bring drinks and enjoy the day out in nature; because of the quarantine, this might not be realistic for some, but if you can do it at the back of the house, why not?
Alternatively, you can use the patio as a venue.
And if you have already done the work on forgiveness, you can be sure to have a good time.
Have a Crafter noon
According to Urban Dictionary, a Crafternoon is an afternoon solely devoted to the joys of craft.
Why not share the joy?
Pull out old albums, share memories, paint, make scrapbooks for each other, draw or do anything artistic that comes naturally to you.
Three things are essential if you decide to have a craft afternoon;
- Be present and savor the experience
- Create something together
- Have fun
Make a slide show or video
If you are in quarantine and cannot have a crafternoon, make a slide show or video of the memories you have shared as a family.
Be sure to add your siblings and the experiences that were significant for you.
Add some background music and send it to your mum.
Take her to Movies @ Home
Movies are an excellent way to spend time together.
Make sure you put some thought in deciding which movie to watch and pick a movie you know your mum will love.
Prepare the snacks and invite her over for an afternoon movie. Better yet take the movie with you at her home.
An Email a Day for a Month
Lastly, if you want to put a smile on your mum’s face every day, then send her a daily email for a whole month.
You don’t need to wait until next year’s Mother’s Day to appreciate her, who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Send your mum a note of gratitude every day to her email, and she will have something to look forward to every single day.
Final Thoughts
All things aside, let’s not get lost looking for the perfect gift for our mothers, and instead, give them the things they need most.
